What is periodontics?

Periodontics is the speciality that focuses on the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases affecting the gums and the tissues that support the teeth: the periodontium. Periodontal disease (periodontitis) is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults, frequently due to late diagnosis.

Our approach: biological periodontics

At Bio Salud Dental, we are pioneers in Madrid in applying biological techniques to periodontal treatment. This means using nature as an ally, not as an enemy:

Periodontal ozone therapy: application of medical ozone (O₃) directly into the periodontal pockets. Ozone is a broad-spectrum germicide that eliminates bacteria, viruses and fungi without the need for antibiotics. It also stimulates healing and modulates the immune system.

Microbiological analysis: before treating, we analyse the specific bacteria present in your mouth to design a targeted and effective treatment, not a generic one.

Bio-stimulation laser: low-intensity laser technology that promotes tissue regeneration and reduces inflammation without side effects.

When should you visit a periodontist?

If you notice reddened gums, bleeding when brushing, persistent bad breath, tooth sensitivity or the feeling that your teeth are moving, it is essential to act quickly. Periodontitis is a silent disease that progresses without apparent pain until advanced stages.

Clinical process

Stages of periodontal treatment

At Bio Salud Dental, we follow a structured protocol that combines precision diagnosis with biological therapies:

1. Comprehensive diagnosis: we carry out a full periodontogram, periapical radiographs and a microbiological analysis to identify the bacteria responsible for the infection. This allows us to design a personalised treatment plan, not a generic one.

2. Hygienic phase: scaling and root planing (curettage) to remove subgingival calculus and bacterial toxins adhered to the roots. This phase is complemented with ozone therapy in the periodontal pockets for deep disinfection without antibiotics.

3. Laser therapy: we apply a bio-stimulation laser to the treated areas to reduce inflammation, promote tissue regeneration and accelerate soft tissue healing.

4. Re-evaluation: between 4 and 6 weeks later, we re-measure the periodontal pockets and assess the response to treatment. In most cases, significant improvement is observed.

5. Periodontal maintenance: every 3 to 6 months, depending on the severity of the case, we carry out maintenance cleanings to prevent relapse. Regular maintenance is the key to long-term success.

Integrative dentistry

Periodontics and general health

Scientific evidence has shown that periodontitis is not just an oral problem. Periodontal bacteria and the chronic inflammation they generate can affect the entire body:

Cardiovascular diseases: periodontal bacteria have been found in atherosclerotic plaques. Periodontitis increases the risk of heart attack and stroke.

Diabetes: a bidirectional relationship exists. Poorly controlled diabetes worsens periodontitis, and periodontitis makes blood sugar control more difficult.

Pregnancy: periodontitis is associated with a greater risk of premature birth and low birth weight.

Autoimmune diseases: chronic periodontal inflammation can aggravate systemic diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis.

This is precisely why biological dentistry treats the mouth as part of the whole body, not as an isolated compartment. If periodontal disease has already caused tooth loss, zirconia implants are the biocompatible alternative to restore function and aesthetics.

Frequently asked questions

We answer your questions

Periodontitis is a chronic infectious disease that destroys the tissues supporting the teeth (gums, ligament and bone). It begins with untreated gingivitis and can lead to tooth loss. It is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults.

Yes. Scientific evidence links periodontitis to cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, pregnancy complications and autoimmune diseases. Another reason for the integrative approach of biological dentistry.

The most common signs are: reddened or swollen gums, bleeding when brushing or flossing, persistent bad breath, gum recession, tooth sensitivity and tooth mobility.

Ozone therapy is the application of medical ozone (O₃) into the periodontal pockets to eliminate bacteria without antibiotics; it also accelerates healing and modulates the immune system. The bio-stimulation periodontal laser complements this treatment: it uses low-intensity light energy to reduce inflammation, promote tissue regeneration and accelerate healing without side effects. Together, they form an advanced, minimally invasive protocol without the need for antibiotics.

Periodontal treatments are performed under local anaesthesia when necessary. Ozone therapy is completely painless. Post-operative discomfort is usually mild.

Periodontitis can be controlled and stabilised, preventing its progression. Periodontal treatment combined with ozone therapy and good home care allows you to keep your teeth for many years.

Generally every 3 to 6 months, depending on the severity of the case. Maintenance is essential to prevent relapse.
